Gill Grange by Robert Rishworth
The account below is also contained in part two of my book 'Rishworth - A Thousand Years of Family History'.
The photos above and below are of a map of Silsden, c1614, located in the Yorkshire Archaeological Society Archives in Leeds. The map was prepared in connection with a coal mining dispute, but is centralised on Gill Grange. You will note the two different spellings of GG. This is not a "to scale" map and should be regarded as illustrative, rather than geographical. I want to do further studies to firm up on actual locations. "The Colepitt in Question" is marked on the map, and is slightly larger and above a group of about 5 other pits, above and to the right of GG. The map interestingly shows the proximity of Swartha, Brunthwaite and GG. Roofs coloured yellow represent straw thatch, whilst red is for tiles. If you wish to reproduce any of these photos there is no copyright restriction because of disputed ownership. The dispute is between the Westmoreland Estate (Lord Hothfield) and the Skipton Castle Estate, therefore the map is lodged with the YAS Archives. Any reproduction/publication should however include an acknowledgment that the original is located at the YAS Archives. The original map is about 750cm by 600cm.
